Cactus Flowered pelargoniums better know as Geraniums is a sub group pf zonal pelargoniums developed by spontaneous mutation from single and double zonal types.
This spontaneous mutation was first started in the mid-nineteen hundreds.
They were named cactus because they look a lot like the quelled petals of cactus flowering dahlias.
They do not have anything to do with cactus plants.
Fancy-leaf geraniums called ornamental sometimes are part of the zonal group with similar colors. They have coloration other than standard green. They are white, yellow, coral, burgundy, gold, red, purple and bronze in color.
They may can be spotted, or outlined in contrasting colors.
The flower color includes red, pink, salmon, and white.
Tricolors have 4 colors, typically a white to golden ivory margin, prominent brownish zone created by red pigment amongst the green & a green central area. Where the margin overlaps the zone red to orange appear, providing the fourth color.
ZONALS AND ZONAL UNIQUE
Zonals are resilient plants with green leaves and clusters of flowers in red, pink, white, purple or orange that has large blooms spring to fall. In warm winter areas Zonals are Perennials, may grow up to 3 feet tall. In cooler areas they are annuals. Can be used as houseplants for the winter.
